Chapter 16 - CHAPTER 16

"You don't understand Damon. Haven't you learned anything from the incident with Sarah? He's truly capable of anything to achieve his goals," Stefan retorted, perhaps unwilling to admit the truth of Kevin's words himself.

"Alright then. If the ring protects you from sunlight, what's the necklace for?" Kevin asked, pointing to the necklace in Stefan's hand.

"The necklace belonged to Katherine. It seems to be a magical item too. I don't know what Damon intends to do with it," Stefan replied.

"Since this necklace belonged to Katherine, it's probably very important to Damon. You can take the ring to him later as a condition for him not harming Elena. I'll take the necklace. If he wants it, he can come find me for it," Kevin said, holding out his hand for Stefan to give him the necklace.

"Okay," Stefan said after a moment's thought and handed the necklace to Kevin.

"I'll take it to Bonnie later and let her take a look. Since she's a witch, she should be able to figure out what this necklace does," Kevin said after taking the necklace.

"A witch?" Elena asked, puzzled.

"Yeah, she's also just recently awakened her powers and doesn't know how to use them yet. She's probably been at her Grams' place learning lately," Kevin explained.

"I only confirmed it last time at the car wash when her powers went out of control," Caroline added from the side.

"Alright, Stefan, let's go to your place and check on Sarah," Kevin said to Stefan.

"Okay, let's go together. Later, if she really accepts the transformation, we might need your help too," Stefan replied.

The group then got into Elena's car and drove to Stefan's house.

"Is Sarah upstairs?" Kevin asked Stefan as they entered the house and didn't see Sarah.

"Maybe. I'll go up and check," Stefan said, then ran upstairs.

"Sarah's gone!" Stefan exclaimed, rushing back down with vampire speed.

"When did Sarah wake up?" Kevin asked Stefan.

"She was awake when I came back this morning. I didn't tell her about the transformation. I did tell her I'd bring you over later," Stefan explained.

"Caroline, does Sarah have any other relatives or friends here in Mystic Falls?" Kevin asked Caroline.

"I'm not sure. Before this, I also hadn't seen Sarah for several years. Her family all moved away from Mystic Falls years ago," Caroline replied uncertainly.

"Stefan, we're fast. Let's split up and search. If we wait too long and Sarah doesn't know she needs to feed on human blood to transform, it'll be too late," Kevin said to Stefan.

"Okay," Stefan agreed without any hesitation, nodding.

"Stefan, I'll search in the direction of my house. Caroline, you guys wait here for now. I'll be back before dark," Kevin said to the group, then activated the Rabbit Talisman and dashed off.

Kevin first ran to his own house but didn't find her. He then meticulously searched various branching roads, one by one. Even with the Rabbit Talisman, it took a considerable amount of time. After searching almost everywhere, it was nearly dark, and there was still no trace of Sarah. Kevin had no choice but to head back to Stefan's house first to meet up with Caroline and the others. He also decided to call Stefan and ask about his search results.

"How's it going? Is Stefan back yet?" Kevin asked upon returning to Stefan's house.

"Not yet. Didn't Sarah go back to your place?" Caroline asked.

"No. Let me call Stefan and ask," Kevin replied.

"Hey Stefan, did you find anything on your end? I didn't find her over here, so I came back first. Don't worry about Elena," Kevin said directly after the call connected, letting Stefan know his location so Stefan wouldn't worry. After all, the area Kevin had searched was mostly residential with main roads, primarily because his own house was in that direction, and there was a higher chance Sarah might have gone there. The area Stefan was searching was mostly outdoor forests, which was much harder to search.

"I'm at the cemetery. I hear someone crying in the distance. I'm going to check it out; I might have found her," Stefan replied over the phone.

"Okay, then don't hang up. If you find her, let us talk to Sarah and see if we can calm her down," Caroline said to Stefan, as Kevin's phone was on speaker, and she had heard they might have found Sarah.

"Okay," Stefan said and then ran towards the sound of crying.

"Hey, Sarah," Stefan said, spotting Sarah curled up in front of a tombstone.

"I'm starting to remember things from before... who he was, what he said. I also remember what you and Kevin said at your house and at the party. I remember everything," Sarah said, lifting her head to look at Stefan.

"I'm so sorry. Damon had no right to do this to you," Stefan said to Sarah, his face filled with guilt.

"He said I need to drink blood. What happens if I don't?" Sarah asked Stefan, crying.

"You'll quickly become weak, and then... it will all be over," Stefan replied.

"I'll die, won't I?" Sarah asked, her voice choked with sobs.

Seeing Stefan nod in silent confirmation, Sarah's tears flowed even more uncontrollably.

"Sarah!" Caroline, hearing what seemed to be a conversation with Sarah, called out into the phone.

"It's going to be okay. You'll be alright. I can help you. Caroline, Elena, and Kevin will help you too. They're all waiting for you to come back right now. They're very worried about you," Stefan said, holding the phone out towards Sarah.

"Can you take me back?" Sarah asked, looking up at Stefan upon hearing the voices from the phone.

"Of course," Stefan quickly agreed, standing up and intending to help Sarah up.

Just as Sarah reached out her hand to Stefan, a gunshot rang out, and Stefan collapsed, an undeniable groan of pain escaping him.

"Stefan?!" Elena, hearing Stefan get hurt, immediately cried out into the phone.

"Kevin, help me save Stefan!" Elena pleaded with Kevin.

"Elena, stay calm! Ask what happened! It's too far from here; even with my speed, I might not make it in time. And it's not safe for you and Caroline to be there. Relatively speaking, I have more confidence in Stefan's abilities," Kevin said. He had heard the gunshot, but firearms weren't usually very effective against Stefan; his wounds would heal quickly. This was a conclusion Kevin had drawn from repeatedly beating up Damon.

"No!" Just as Kevin finished refusing and before he could ask about the situation, Sarah's scream came through the phone, followed by the sound of a body thudding to the ground.

"It was made of wood. They already know. If anyone is going to kill you, it'll be me. Now, give me the ring and the necklace," Damon's voice snarled from the phone.

"No, Sarah, don't!" Stefan cried out, watching Sarah lunge at a body and begin to feed. Truthfully, Stefan hadn't wanted Sarah to complete the transformation.

"I'm sorry," Sarah said, then ran off.

"Never mind that, where's my necklace? Why is only the ring on you?" Damon interrupted Stefan, asking about his items.

"It's with Kevin. You can talk to him yourself," Stefan said, handing the phone to Damon.

"Damon?" Kevin said immediately upon hearing this.

"Kevin, give me back my necklace," Damon demanded directly.

"Stefan, you go after Sarah first. We need to find her as soon as possible," Kevin said, ignoring Damon and addressing Stefan first.
