Chapter 25 - 25

Upon returning to the cabin, Kevin sorted through the vervain that had just arrived over the past two days. He set aside a few sprigs and processed the rest into a concentrated vervain solution.

Besides preparing ten syringe-weapons, Kevin also readied several wooden stakes and about a dozen chopstick-thin wooden sticks, sharpened at the tips, all of which he soaked in the remaining concentrated vervain. This way, if he threw these sticks—which could be considered hidden projectiles—and they pierced a vampire, even if it didn't incapacitate them entirely, it would at least greatly reduce their speed.

Once all this was done, Kevin decided to stay the night at the cabin. Lying on the bed there, Kevin felt, frankly, increasingly agitated. He sensed that this world and he were becoming more and more out of sync. And after all these events, Kevin's personality was also slowly beginning to change.

When he had first arrived here, under Caroline's influence, Kevin had been integrating quite well. But with the increasingly frequent vampire incidents, the exposure of his superpowers, and his breakup with Caroline, Kevin felt more and more alone in this world, with no sense of belonging whatsoever.

"This is so damn frustrating," Kevin thought, his head aching whenever Caroline came to mind. It wasn't just that Caroline was now with someone else; mainly, Kevin understood Caroline's dilemma, and the one thing Kevin couldn't change was his own immortality.

"Since Caroline has already moved on, I've decided! From now on, I, Kevin Chase, will be a scumbag who adheres to the 'Three No's Principle'!" After tossing and turning in bed, Kevin finally came to this conclusion. Why not? If he was a scumbag, who would care if he was immortal or not? And this "Three No's Principle" was: no initiative, no refusal, no responsibility.

The next day, Kevin, who had only slept half the night due to insomnia, woke up without any morning grumpiness. Not for any particular reason, other than he had simply slept until the point where he no longer felt any morning grumpiness when he finally got out of bed. Simply put, by the time Kevin got up, it was already afternoon again.

After Kevin packed up the weapons he had prepared the day before, putting a few on his person and in his car, with the rest mostly left at the cabin, he had originally planned to go straight to a restaurant. However, by the time he finished packing, it was already evening, so Kevin thought about it and went directly to a bar instead.

"Get me a few orders of fast food and some snacks, please," Kevin said. As soon as he entered the bar, he saw Bonnie and Elena chatting but didn't go over to them, instead heading straight to the bar counter to order some food.

"This is really pissing me off," Kevin muttered. He was halfway through his meal when he saw Damon approach Bonnie. Kevin wiped his mouth, stood up, and walked over.

"What do you want?" Bonnie asked Damon, very much on her guard.

"I think we need to get reacquainted," Damon said to Bonnie.

"You tried to kill me," Bonnie retorted.

"But I didn't. If I really wanted to, you'd have been dead long ago. Isn't that enough sincerity?" Damon argued.

"Or maybe it's just that my kick was faster, Damon. You really have a lot of nerve. The deadline has passed. Bonnie doesn't need to change her opinion of you anymore; it's unnecessary," Kevin said, also walking up to Bonnie's side.

"You'd attack me in a public place with so many people around?" Damon said, clearly unconcerned.

"Leaving aside the fact that I already told you last time that if you hadn't left by the deadline, I'd kill you even if it meant exposing everything. What's more, I have this," Kevin said, pulling out a vial of concentrated vervain solution from his pocket. Before Damon could even open his mouth, Kevin had already injected him with it; Kevin was tired of wasting words on him.

"Are you okay? My car is right outside; I'll take him to the hospital," Kevin said. His speed was sufficient, and Damon immediately collapsed in pain. Kevin pretended to help Damon up, signaling Bonnie to follow.

"I want to avenge Sarah. But I've realized that for someone like Damon, death is probably the best release. So, I plan to desiccate him and bury him underground. I want him to suffer eternal damnation, never to be reborn. Do you think I'm being too cruel?" Kevin asked Bonnie.

Kevin actually understood the principle of killing but not torturing. However, his aversion to Damon had truly reached its limit. Moreover, Kevin had been provoked by Damon to the point of becoming somewhat neurotic; if he didn't punish him severely, Kevin himself wouldn't be able to let go of the anger in his heart.

"Kevin, why are you telling me all this?" Bonnie asked, also finding it very strange. Normally, such things were done in secret; who would involve someone else and even ask for their opinion?

"Maybe I've just been wanting to talk to someone lately. Want to come along?" Kevin asked, having tossed Damon into the back seat of the car and now holding open the front passenger door for Bonnie.

"I'll take you somewhere," Kevin said, then drove Bonnie to his cabin.

"Bonnie, Damon, come on in," Kevin invited Damon into the house. After all, Kevin didn't know if forcibly dragging an unconscious Damon into the house might somehow kill him (due to the invitation rule).

"Bonnie, take some of this vervain. You might need it. Right now, in Mystic Falls, besides what Stefan and his group might have, I'm probably the only one who just ordered some," Kevin said, after dumping Damon on the floor. He then took out some of the vervain he had set aside the day before and handed it to Bonnie.

"Thanks, Kevin," Bonnie said, taking the vervain, intending to keep it for Caroline and the others as a backup.

"What's there to thank me for? Speaking of which, Bonnie, you were the first friend I made when I came to Mystic Falls. And I know that if I give this to you, you'll definitely prepare some for Caroline, since it's not convenient for me to go see her right now," Kevin said, then took a syringe of vervain from the tool rack in the cabin and injected Damon with it again.

"By the way, Bonnie, where do you think would be a good place to keep Damon locked up?" Kevin asked Bonnie.

"Honestly, I have no idea. It's not like I've ever done this kind of thing before," Bonnie replied, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.

"Bonnie, I know this whole thing isn't exactly pleasant, but think about all the things Damon has done. I feel like no matter what we do to him, it's not going too far. There are many things you all might not be fully aware of," Kevin said. He then proceeded to tell Bonnie everything: how Damon had toyed with and controlled Vicki before eventually killing her, how he had killed Tanner, how he had turned Sarah into a vampire and then caused her death, and how Damon had used Caroline to threaten him when Kevin sought revenge.

"Tell me, as I list your sins here, do you feel even a shred of remorse listening to it?" Kevin said, crouching down and flipping Damon's body over.

"Kevin, I know Damon deserves to die, but Stefan..." Bonnie felt that killing Damon wasn't unacceptable, but torturing him for a lifetime... Stefan probably wouldn't agree to that.

"Don't mention that hypocrite to me. Honestly, if it weren't for him, I would have killed Damon long ago. And it wouldn't have been because of his constant interference that Damon was able to use Caroline to threaten me time and time again, leaving me with no options," Kevin interrupted Bonnie. Truthfully, Kevin's hatred for Stefan was no less than his hatred for Damon; someone who abets a villain is just as detestable. If Kevin hadn't known that Stefan was, at his core, a "good person," he would have staked him long ago.

"Bonnie, what do you think about burying Damon next to the church after he's completely desiccated in a few days?" Kevin suddenly thought of this place and asked.

"Why would you think of burying him there?" Bonnie asked, somewhat perplexed.

"Damon has always wanted to rescue Katherine, hasn't he? Wouldn't I be doing him a favor by helping them reunite?" Kevin said with a wicked grin.
